$ 6,995.00
Item #: 104590

A spectacular example and an important part of plane making history. 8 3/8" long plus the overhang. Original 1 3/4" Moulson Bros. iron. 50% japanning and fine rosewood.  One of the finest examples we have ever seen. More than 10 years before the familiar Stanley / Bailey patent planes of 1867, Leonard Bailey began producing Split Frame planes in a shed in Winchester, Mass.ca. 1856. There was a depression in 1857 and Split Frame planes were expensive to make. They are thus very rare today. Bailey moved his shop to Boston in 1858 and by 1860 he was producing the Vertical Post bench planes. By 1867 and 7 plane patents later he had perfected the adjustable bench plane. The 7 patents, rights, stock and business were sold to Stanley in 1869. Fine.
