Rosewood and Steel HENLEY OPTICAL No. 6 Infill Smooth Plane - 80137U - AS OF MAY 16

$ 2,000.00
Item #: 80137U

Marked under the tote and Dated 1977. 8 1/4 inches long. 50° bed angle. 2 1/8 inch iron.  7.8 pounds. The ONLY known example! The HENLEY OPTICAL Co. Henley-On-Thames, Oxon in England later known as THE HENLEY PLANE Co. worked ca. 1976-81. They made extremely high quality planes to exacting tolerances. Their planes are characterized by thick brass sides with heavy, solid steel infill covered by rosewood.
We have acquired 10 Henley planes, formerly of a prominent Athens, Ga. collection.
Of the ten planes, eight are heretofore unknown to exist. We believe the Georgia collector commissioned these planes or simply bought the Henley prototypes. Henley is known to have kept one of each of their planes for posterity and some of these are marked with a number 2. The planes are mechanically 100% with zero wear but have light discolorations all over. Every single plane except the smoother is a bevel up design with a razor slit for a mouth. You will never see finer. All have silky smooth Norris-type adjusters.
