Probably the best of all time, his planes exhibit elegant flowing lines that to this day are unequaled. A cabinetmaker by trade his first planes were made from rough castings purchased in Edinburgh. By 1870 plane making was his sole occupation. Spiers used various iron manufacturers including WARD, IBBOTSON & HOWARTH Later Spiers planes had SPIERS irons.
