The actual plane shown on page 75 of Nigel Lampert’s book “Through Much Tribulation Stewart Spiers and the Planemakers of Ayr”. Dovetailed steel with rosewood infill. 2 1/4 inch Spiers parallel iron has original factory grind.

Stewart Spiers born 1820, died 1899, made dovetailed infill planes in Ayr Scotland ca. 1840-1937. Probably the best of all time, his planes exhibit elegant flowing lines that to this day are unequaled. A cabinetmaker by trade his first planes were made from rough castings purchased in Edinburgh. By 1870 plane making was his sole occupation.
