With 4 days to kill between events, my daughter Stephanie and I were lazily driving around Kentucky and Ohio, killing time alternating between Mexican restaurants and antique malls. We had finished going through a huge mall, hit the restrooms and made a beeline for the exit. At the end of an aisle right in front of us was the holy grail. It was in a well- lit case at eye level. Somehow, we had managed to miss it: a solid ebony No. 112 center wheel plow plane by OHIO TOOL CO. COLUMBUS. In an antique mall! Only the third example of an ebony Ohio center wheel ever found. It's in GOOD+ condition. The threaded adjuster and wedge were restored by Jim Leamy. All ebony with rosewood trim. No apologies. The Ohio Tool Co. was established in 1823 and operated until 1920. The center wheel plow, sold as the self regulating plow was patented in 1869 by Harmon Van Buskirk. There is some evidence that the first company to make them, Ohio Tool Co. was manufacturing them well before that. I don't know when they stopped making them but the center wheel does not appear in the 1910 catalog.
