F*NICHOLSON WRENTHAM 18th Century Moulding Plane 5 STAR MARK Yellow Birch - EXCELSIOR 99034 - AS OF JULY 1

$ 1,195.00
Item #: EXCELSIOR 99034

The RARE “A” mark. 10 inches long. Excellent mark. GOOD+ condition. The mark, a variation of the "A" mark (5 stars). The NICHOLSON stamp looks like the “A” mark, but the WRENTHAM stamp is clearly not. While it has the crisscrossing Vs making up the W, now the A and the M are separated. Also, all the letters have little feet.

Francis NICHOLSON (circa 1683-1753) was the earliest documented plane maker in the USA. Working in Wrentham, MA. When he died, he left most of his tools to his plane maker son, John. To his slave, plane maker Cesar CHELOR, he left tools, land, and his freedom.
