Book: HAND BOOK OF TURNING 1842 by Mary Isabella Oliver Gascoigne - 81917R

$ 95.00
Item #: 81917R

Hard cover, 142 pages. Still, to this day, recommended reading on the subject. This book is, for 1842, very unusual in having been written by a woman: Mary Isabella Oliver Gascoigne, an extremely accomplished turner. There is an unusual frontispiece of the lady, Done in the Lathe. Written anonymously, as at the time it would have been scandalous for a woman of aristocracy to write a book. Mary Isabella Oliver Gascoigne was born on 21 March 1810. She was the daughter of Richard Philip Oliver Gascoine and Mary Turner. She married Colonel Frederick Charles Trench Gascoigne. She died on 22 October 1891 at the age of 81. She was also reported to have died on 25 October 1891.
